Fred Meyer/ Kroger put out a Pierce County call for an artist to design and complete a 5’6” X 46’ 4” mural for their new store in Gig Harbor. I applied and was chosen, along with 2 other artists, to design a representional mural about Gig Harbor.
My design was chosen!
ARTIST STATEMENT:
'Cross Section' revolves around one core element - a slice of a tree. Building off themes of nature, water and Gig Harbor’s past and present, all surrounding images are connected and echo off the growth rings. Its outward movement is reminiscent of sound waves, water ripples, or waves traveling on a still bay. The deer, octopus and harbor seal gaze outward, inviting you to investigate within the design - to voyage from Gig Harbor’s forest to its underwater environment and back up to its beaches.

Acrylics and watercolors on watercolor paper.
I painted this mural on mural canvas which I had shipped to my studio. Here is the initial coloration. Purpose: to mess up the perfect white of the canvas!
Blocking in more of the elements after splitting up the canvas into five 9' sections.
Adding more detail.
At one point I needed to see that all 5 sections flowed into one another smoothly. So, I laid them all out in my driveway :)
Applying the 5 sections onto the walls of the Fred Meyer like wallpaper.

The mural is centrally placed near the cash registers.
